How to best spend time alone, self-awareness and personal growth

Our time is limited and very precious. It’s our most limited resource and the one we can never get back. For that reason, we need to spend it wisely and have some time to grow and improve ourselves. This is why we have to schedule some time for ourselves in solitude. Hence, in this blog post, we will find out how to best spend time alone.

Why alone time is important

I know plenty of people who are never alone. They’re afraid of being left with their own thoughts for too long. If you also lead a full life of group classes, TV shows, pubs, festivals and all sorts of activities with people around, that is fantastic and sounds like so much fun!

It is worth noticing however, that self-discovery is a very important task for each of us. Self-awareness and self-development happen in solitude. There are situations with others that trigger certain responses in us, but then we need alone time to process what happened and our emotions resulting from the interactions with others.

You are the most important person in your life and your own dream girl. It is of utmost importance to figure out who this person is, what she wants from life, what are her ambitions and dreams. Answer the questions like, what are your non-negotiables in a future relationship, what are your values and where do you draw the boundaries?

Spending time alone can be a wonderful opportunity for self-discovery, self-care, and personal growth, regardless of your gender. The key is to prioritise activities that bring you joy, relaxation or advancement in your life, and a sense of fulfilment during your alone time. It’s also important to listen to your own needs and preferences, as everyone’s idea of the perfect alone time can be different.

Ways to spend your me-time well

Whether you are an introvert or an extravert, we all need to schedule some time for ourselves. Here is how to best spend time alone for self-improvement in solitude that will guarantee gradual, motivating personal growth:

1. Meditation

Meditation can help you deeply relax, focus, and gain clarity. I invite you to meditate with me! It’s a great way to slow down in this high-paced life. Moreover, mindfulness will help you to stay present and reduce stress. I personally love meditations with affirmations or guided mindfulness meditations focusing on my breath, what I feel and where in my body. It clears my mind, helps me to ground myself and come up with solutions full of understanding for myself and others.

2. Self-care and self-compassion

Taking care of yourself is so important to feel good. Run a bubble bath, do a skincare routine, or treat yourself to a spa day at home. Taking care of your physical well-being can boost your confidence and self-esteem. Forgive and accept yourself unconditionally.

3. Walk in the forest or garden

Find a safe place to walk among trees alone and absorb their calm. Furthermore, walk in nature regularly with podcasts and audiobooks (or these blog posts with audio!) in your ears to learn new tools to increase self-awareness and deal with your emotions. Or you can just relax surrounded by greenery in silence.

4. Reading and research

Read non-fiction books that help you understand the world around us and within us. Reach out for many different domains: psychology, finance, nutrition or whatever else you see fit. Spend some time researching how to take care of your specific type of hair and skin, what sort of healthy diet and exercise regiment works for you best. Explore and see what resonates with you. There’s so much to learn!

5. Journal

Journaling is a great way to regulate and understand your thoughts and emotions. Pour everything you need that is on your mind onto a piece of paper. And be honest with yourself. Write down every day two things you are grateful for and two personal wins of this day (what went well and what you are proud of).

6. Solo travel

Solo travel can be empowering and provide opportunities for personal growth. Go to a place that is safe enough you can travel alone or simply go for a weekend trip somewhere close just by yourself. You might meet new people or you can spend this time getting to know yourself.

7. Solo date

Take yourself for a cinema or museum date. Treat yourself to something you enjoy once in a while and provide yourself with this princess treatment you deserve.

8. Creative expression

If you enjoy creative activities, spend time doing things like painting, drawing, writing, or crafting. Creativity can be a therapeutic outlet for your emotions and imagination.

9. Reflection and self-discovery

Remember to be kind to yourself during your alone time. Practice self-compassion and self-acceptance. Dig deeper to find out what you want from your future and think about plans to achieve it.

10. Watching inspiring content

Watch documentaries, TED talks, or listen to podcasts and audiobooks that inspire and motivate you. Simultaneously, they are a great way to absorb new knowledge from others who achieved what we want to achieve or are going through the same thing as we do.

11. Working out

Physical activity is great for both mental and physical health. Take long walks, go for hikes, practice yoga, or engage in any other form of exercise you enjoy.

Conclusion

The importance of spending time alone cannot be overstated. In our fast-paced, interconnected world, solitude offers a precious opportunity for self-discovery and growth.

It’s a chance to understand our true selves, nurture our passions, and prioritise self-care. Whether through meditation, self-reflection, creative expression, or simply enjoying a solo date, these moments of solitude enrich our lives, making us more self-aware and resilient individuals.

So, embrace your alone time, cherish it, and let it be the catalyst for your personal journey toward fulfilment and self-improvement. Remember, investing in yourself is one of the wisest choices you can make.
